Bee America Introduces Liberty Honey

Bee America Introduces Liberty Honey

A blend of honey capturing the colonial spirit and refreshing the palate.

Bethesda-based Bee America introduced three new honey blends earlier this year. These blends are based on original honey that sustained Americans as they explored and settled in the United States. Liberty Honey is the introductory blend in this series.

Liberty Honey demonstrates the bright spirit of colonial American honey. The Founding Fathers believed that liberty signified the freedom from dependence on another’s will. It was the opposite of tyranny. The first of the American Heritage Collection, Liberty Honey pays tribute to the principles of individualism and natural rights with this unique blend of honey – a blend that stands out in its uniqueness and wakens the palate.

It was the pilgrims – many of whom were fleeing poverty, persecution or wars in their own countries – who brought honey bees to North America in 1622. Some of these early settlers had extensive beekeeping skills, which helped to ensure the survival of the honey bees during the formative years of the United States. Over the next 100 years, honey bees slowly spread along the eastern seaboard. During this period honey bee populations were mostly feral and their honey helped supplement the colonists’ sparse diet. In the middle of 18th century, however, beeswax became an important 18th century Virginia export marking the beginnings of a nascent bee industry in colonial America.

Bee America was started over a desire to make pure honey – honey that we could trust as true honey. At the present time, 75% of the honey sold in grocery stores in the U.S. is NOT true honey due to the absence of pollen. The food safety divisions of the World Health Organization, the European Commission and dozens of others have ruled that without pollen there is no way to determine whether the honey came from legitimate and safe sources. In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration says that any product that's been ultra-filtered and no longer contains pollen isn't honey. However, the FDA isn't checking honey sold here to see if it contains honey.

The Liberty Honey is not only true honey, but one that was carefully blended using the flora of the age and region common to our forefathers.  Its bold taste speaks to our individualism and independence.

The American Heritage Collection blends of honey are available as single bottles and jars or as gift boxes for personal or corporate gift giving.
