Bee America Introduces Pioneer Honey

Bee America Introduces Pioneer Honey

A bold blend of honey that reminds us of the strength and character of our American pioneers.

Bethesda-based Bee America introduced three new honey blends earlier this year. These blends are based on original honey that sustained Americans as they explored and settled in the United States. Pioneer Honey is the second honey blend in this series.

Pioneer Honey is characterized by its robust taste and sweetness. This honey is reminiscent of the blend of wild flowers that flourish at the forest edge where American pioneers tended their straw hives or skeps in glades of the Ohio River Valley. Pioneer Honey reflects the perseverance and hard work of the men and women who settled America’s first frontier during the mid-eighteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. The bold taste of Pioneer Honey became a comfort food of sorts to the pioneers, and still brings the same comfort to our generation.

Humans have been keeping honey bees for thousands of years, prizing the golden liquid that they harvest from hives for its rich, nourishing sweetness. During the westward expansion to the Ohio River Valley, honey bees sustained pioneers by providing honey, wax and propolis (i.e., resinous mixture that honey bees collect from tree buds or sap). These products were used both for human consumption and for sale to provide an income. Furthermore, the honey bees pollinated the seeds and saplings that the settlers brought with them from Europe. By enabling new species of plants and trees to grow, honey bees helped to maintain the settlers’ livestock by enabling the growth of white clover and other English grasses that were used to feed the animals.

Our pioneers may have also understood the medicinal value of honey and used it to treat wounds and soothe sore throats. Comprised of glucose, fructose and minerals such as iron, calcium, phosphate, sodium chlorine, potassium and magnesium, honey naturally prevents the growth of bacteria, while its antioxidant components eliminate free radicals.

The American Heritage Collection blends of honey are available as single bottles and jars or as gift boxes for personal or corporate gift giving. Bee America offers only natural honey and honey products, which contain no additives or artificial preservatives. The company does its own extracting and bottling.
