Bees Just Wanna Have Fun
Bee America
Cool Science: Scientists have recently discovered that bumblebees can actually play with wooden balls, rolling them around in various patterns. When animals engage in an activity that does not benefit them with regard to food, shelter, or other specific needs, scientists consider it to be play. Animal play is used to determine whether a particular species is sentient (i.e., have feelings and express emotions). Scientists are not sure whether the bees are rolling the ball around for pleasure or because it helps them develop and refine their motor skills. Curiously, younger bees and male bees seem to engage in the activity more often.
